This takes about 5 minutes. You can review everything before you submit.
You need a different form. If your dog is already registered with Hutt City Council, use the Update dog details form.
Tick what applies. We will fill in some answers for your first dog and only ask for the documents you need.
You must register your dog:
Registration runs from 1 July to 30 June. Your dog must live in Lower Hutt.
In an urban area, keeping more than 2 dogs over 3 months old needs a special licence and a fee as well as registration. We will send you a link to apply after you submit, or you can apply at a council counter.
We collect the owner’s name, date of birth, address and contact details under the Dog Control Act 1996 to keep accurate records of dogs and their owners.
This information is shared with the National Dog Database run by the Department of Internal Affairs, and stored under the Hutt City Council privacy policy.
You will be the primary owner. You get the invoice and are responsible for the fees.
You must be 16 or older to be the registered owner of a dog. The Dog Control Act requires the owner’s date of birth, and it is shared with the National Dog Database.
This helps us find your existing owner record.
If that dog is still registered and only its owner or address has changed, use the Update dog details form instead.
Where the dog will live, and who else is a registered owner.
We don’t recognise this as a Lower Hutt suburb. Check the spelling. Dogs that live outside Lower Hutt must be registered with their local council.
Include the dog or dogs you are registering.
In an urban area you need a special licence for more than 2 dogs over 3 months old. We will email you a link to apply after you submit. You can also apply at the main office (30 Laings Rd), Koraunui Stokes Valley Hub, Wainuiomata Hub or Animal Services in Seaview.
A secondary owner is also a registered owner, but is not responsible for fees.
Tell us about the dog you are registering.
Check your vet record or adoption papers. Rescue dog with no records? Choose “Years and months” and give your best estimate.
Dogs must be registered once they are 3 months old. You can still register now.
Pick the closest match. “Crossbreed” can’t be the main breed.
For a Labradoodle, choose Labrador Retriever, tick “Mixed breed” and add Poodle. More than two breeds? Add the others under distinguishing marks.
Start typing and choose from the list.
Choose “Crossbreed” if you are not sure.
Choose the colour that covers most of the coat. Brindle is a striped coat. Merle is a mottled or patchy coat.
For example, a white patch on the chest or a docked tail.
